Charles Francis

I was born in Reigate on 25th March 1956 and educated at Ampleforth College, Yorkshire. While at school I won three prizes for theses on mathematics. Each of these contained original work. One was a national competition run by Warwick University. I always intended to pursue my ideas on unification, but felt that it was better to study mathematics than physics, so as to acquire the needed mental discipline and learn the tools of the trade, so to speak. I was awarded a scholarship to Jesus College, Cambridge, and graduated in mathematics in 1978. After another year at Cambridge, I spent three years at London and won a Ph.D. also in mathematics, but the topic was A Non-standard Construction of Quantum Electrodynamics. After my Ph.D., my research was curtailed due to budget cuts. I continued to teach for a while in adult education and as a private tutor and later made a career in independent software developer.

I have a belief that to progress unification we must simplify and clarify the conceptual foundations of quantum theory and general relativity. This is helped by attempting to explain these theories on a popular level. I try to do this in posts on sci.physics.foundations where I am a moderator and I have taught courses of science popularisation in adult education. I have a Further Education Teacher Certificate.

Charles E H Francis,
M.A., Ph.D.
